Oia is another of the villages located on the edge of the caldera and, when you see it for the first time, it may seem like a smaller version of Fira. The city is really beautiful and the mix of buildings is spectacular, although you will not find the ugliness and business of the main street of Fira.
The city is surprisingly large and is crossed by a main pedestrian street. There's a parking when entering the village, which is where you should leave the car and walk on foot to the heart of the city. Inside you can find a lot of craft shops, cafes, bars and clothing stores.
Oia has a great story of artists and for that reason there is a great variety of small galleries to visit. From the central square you can enjoy the Platani church, one of the architectural gems of the city. Very close to here and after a short walk you can find one with the Armeni beach.
When walking from the main pedestrian street you can enjoy the view of the island of Thirasia. This place is ideal to enjoy the views of the city with its variety of whites, blues, oranges and roses. You will also be able to find an old mill. From this area, the view of sunset it is magnificent. In fact, many tourists make the trip here just to enjoy the sunset. When in the end, the sun is lost sight of on the horizon, it usually unleashes a round of applause in appreciation of the spectacle that has just been witnessed.
What to see in Oia (Ia)
El Maritime Museum Santorini is located in an elegant mansion where you can find a large number of nautical instruments, boarding documents, watercolors, parts of boats and a small library.
Thirassia is a small island just in front of Oia, often connected to Santorini by tourist boats. It is a secluded place with very few inhabitants where still to this day nature remains virgin.
The sunset of Santorini is probably the most famous in the world. It is beautiful view from all parts of the island, but Oia is undoubtedly the best where you can enjoy this vision. Thousands of couples in love come to Santorini every year to watch the sunset or marry this beautiful background.
We recommend you be with time and choose a good place to wait for that moment, either between the intricate alleyways of the town or from the small fortress which is at the end.
